Legal knowledge is no longer the exclusive domain of those who practice law; it is a powerful asset for both aspiring and practicing attorneys, and professionals across industries.

Organizations are navigating evolving regulations, emerging technologies, and increasingly complex legal and ethical challenges. The value of legal knowledge remains essential to practicing attorneys while continuing to expand beyond traditional legal practice, as professionals across industries pair their subject-matter expertise with an understanding of how the law influences business strategy, risk-management, compliance, policy, and organizational decision-making.

Businesses and clients increasingly recognize the value of legal knowledge and reasoning both within and beyond traditional legal practice. In response to this growing demand, the scope of legal education has evolved to meet these changing needs and better align with the realities of modern life. Today’s students are balancing careers, professional commitments, families, and other responsibilities while pursuing graduate education.

By removing geographic barriers, supporting working professionals, and offering flexible pathways for aspiring attorneys, practicing lawyers, and individuals across industries, online programs are helping make legal education more accessible, relevant, and responsive than ever before. Across all of Albany Law’s four online program options, students can pursue their education without relocating, continue working while earning a degree or certificate, and choose a degree that best aligns with their professional goals.

Flex J.D. student Amanda S., J.D. ’27, offers perspective on how the program structure supports her: “The ability to have this course schedule fit into my life in a way that will work for me is really priceless.”

Through a practical and accessible approach to legal education, students immediately apply what they learn to their current roles while building knowledge and skills that create meaningful impact in their careers, organizations, and the world.

Through the Flex J.D., aspiring attorneys can earn a Juris Doctor in a format designed for working professionals. The hybrid Flex J.D. program offers four areas of specialization:

For practicing lawyers, the online Master of Laws (LL.M.) provides an opportunity to deepen expertise in one of five areas of specialization. Likewise, individuals in business or government whose careers intersect with law, regulation, or policymaking will complement their existing expertise in these five specializations through an online Master of Science (M.S.) or Advanced Certificate program:

The students pursuing one of Albany Law’s four online degree options represent a wide range of industries, experiences, and professional backgrounds — united by a shared commitment to advancing their knowledge and meeting the growing demand for legal expertise through accessible, flexible graduate education. Their diverse perspectives enrich the virtual classroom through meaningful engagement and collaborative learning, while the skills they develop help advance their career goals throughout the program and beyond.
