Integrating Learning Into The Busy Lives of Society
Higher Education Mediaplanet sat down with Tom Mackey and Tai Arnold of SUNY Empire State College to talk about the changing face of higher education.
Mediaplanet: How can we influence society to take control of their futures through online education?
Tom: We influence society one learner at a time. Online education prepares learners to design their futures and to influence ours through critical thinking, opportunities for collaboration, and the ability to adapt to emerging technologies. Online education will continue to be the most flexible and learner-centered way to achieve one’s goals.
"Online education will continue to be an exciting format for innovation and collaboration. We will be able to more effectively personalize the learning environment and resources to meet learners where they are, adapting as they learn."
Tai: Online learning provides a flexible and productive way for people to integrate the learning into their busy lives. As educators, we need to provide learners with choices and control, empowering them while providing solid support and guidance as they build a framework to expand their knowledge and skills.
Mediaplanet: In what ways do you see the industry excelling in the next five years?
Tom: We will continue to excel in the design of innovative and user-centered learning environments. This will include open and flexible formats, and integrated approaches to student and academic services. We will harness the power of learning analytics to gain informed insights about ways to improve the experience at every level.
Tai: Online education will continue to be an exciting format for innovation and collaboration. We will be able to more effectively personalize the learning environment and resources to meet learners where they are, adapting as they learn. Gaming will become a powerful learning tool where people will learn together as they play.
